FAQ's
Where is The Batture located?
The Batture sits along Uptown’s riverfront, just steps from Audubon Park and The Fly. We're at the former Bisso Marine site between Walnut and Lowerline Streets, accessible via Walnut over the levee from Leake Ave. And don’t worry—we love Broadway Beach and the levee dog park just as much as you do; they're neighbors but not part of The Batture.
What exactly is The Batture?
The Batture is about bringing new life to the iconic, 10-acre former Bisso Marine salvage yard along the Mississippi River. We're turning this historic industrial site into an inviting public spot featuring local restaurants, a bar, office spaces, retail options, and a lush riverfront lawn—a laid-back, family-friendly space for the community to unwind and soak in unbeatable river views.
What’s currently open at The Batture? Can I swing by?
Right now, The Rigs Workspace is up and running with stylish offices, desks, and conference rooms available for rent. Members of The Rigs get 24/7 access to The Batture. Otherwise, The Batture remains closed to the public except during special events and programming. Keep up-to-date by hopping on our email list or following us on social media. Interested in hosting a private event? Reach out to nina@batture.com.
What am I allowed to bring and what should I wear?
Come prepared for the sun and terrain! Wear comfortable sneakers, hats, and sunglasses, and don’t forget sunscreen. You may also bring drinks, small coolers, and light snacks. However, chairs, tents, and other large items are not allowed.
Where are bathrooms located?
There are public restrooms located in the shipping container in the courtyard, as well as porta-potties across the lawn. Access to the restrooms in the main buildings is not permitted.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a leash at all times, and please clean up after them.
Who’s behind The Batture?
The Batture is brought to you by local developers Ben Jacobson and Casey Burka, two New Orleans natives passionate about their city. Other projects they have worked on around town feature local favorites like French Truck Coffee, Val’s, Blue Oak BBQ, Molly’s Rise and Shine, Gracious Bakery, Daily Beet, Cherry Coffee, Osteria Lupo, Saffron, Mopho, Kanno Sushi, Good Bird, Bellegarde Bakery, Avenue Pub, and PJ’s Coffee.
What’s the project timeline?
We've finished renovating the first buildings for The Rigs Workspace and are currently working through planning and permitting to start construction on additional structures for a coffee shop and bar before the end of 2025. New buildings that will house full service restaurants are also in design phases, with construction to follow soon. Meanwhile, look out for our pop-up events, food trucks, and special programming on-site starting in March 2025.
Can I provide feedback or ideas?
Absolutely! We’ve held several neighborhood meetings and continue to engage actively with the community. Your thoughts matter—reach us anytime at hello@batture.com.
Being outside the levee—is flooding an issue?
We hear you. Safety is our top priority. Our plans include significant re-grading and infill work designed specifically to enhance levee security and prevent water ponding along the levee. All structures will meet or exceed standards from the Army Corps of Engineers, Flood Protection Authority-East, and the City of New Orleans, and they'll sit at over 22 feet above sea level—significantly higher than the highest-ever recorded river levels.
Who’s operating the businesses at The Batture?
We're proud to have sparked significant interest among fantastic local businesses. While we’re keeping names under wraps for now, we're dedicated to partnering with great local vendors, restaurants, and a standout bar that reflect the spirit of New Orleans. Interested business owners, let’s chat—hello@batture.com.
How do I reach you directly?
Easy—just email us at hello@batture.com.
What are your current operating hours?
Currently, The Batture is open daily exclusively to members of The Rigs Workspace. Stay tuned for news about expanded public access and special programming coming soon.
How can I support The Batture?
Love the vision? Show us some support by following us on Instagram, reaching out to city leaders to express support for the project, signing up for our email updates, or grabbing some Batture merch.
Will The Batture increase traffic and noise in the area?
We're committed to being good neighbors. We designed the Batture at a neighborhood scale to minimize any negative impacts to the surrounding area. We're conducting detailed traffic studies and will provide over 330 off-street parking spaces to ease any potential congestion. The nearest neighbor is over a full city block away and on the other side of the levee so we're confident noise will be minimal and manageable.
Can existing infrastructure support the development?
We’re working hand-in-hand with city planners and engineers to ensure infrastructure can handle the new project. Our approach stays neighborhood-scale and respectful to the existing vibe of Uptown.
Could The Batture impact the levee’s integrity?
No worries here—our plans actively enhance levee safety. Significant site grading and infill will prevent water accumulation at the levee's base, and every structure built at The Batture is designed in strict compliance with standards from the Army Corps of Engineers, Flood Protection Authority-East, and the City of New Orleans.
The Batture will consist of a riverfront park with a series of mixed-use buildings. Please contact us at hello@batture.com for more information about these projects and/or if you wish to lease space at the site.
